» New fundraising initiative launched at 15 year anniversary
CORK, Friday September 7th 2007: Bishopstown GAA Club played host this evening to the launch of Cork GAA Clubs Draw which was attended by over 200 people. The organisation was honoured to have Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Donal Counihan officially launching this year’s draw and Cllr. Tom Sheehan County Mayor of Cork launching the new fundraising website. In attendance were Cork GAA Board Chairman Micheál O Dubhlain, Jerry O'Sullivan Cork GAA Draw Steering Committee Chairman, Cork hurlers Ronan Curran and Patrick Cronin, Cork Footballers Nicholas Murphy and James Masters, members of Cork city and county GAA clubs, local business representatives and a host of distinguished guests.
Established in 1992 following the purchase of Páirc Uí Rinn by the Cork County Board, the Cork GAA Club Draw had three aims; to develop Páirc Uí Rinn as a modern stadium, to provide the CLCG Chorcaí with funds for coaching and youth development throughout the County and to provide Clubs with finance to fund their ongoing developments both on and off the field. Certainly over the past fifteen years these aims have been met and exceeded. The draw has played a crucial part in providing funding to GAA Clubs in Cork city and county, raising over €12 million to date.
The Draw concept is simple – individuals purchase a ticket for €100 and nominate the Cork club they wish to support. Clubs have benefited from the monies raised in a variety of ways: Dressing Room and Pavilion development, all weather pitch development, floodlighting pitches, purchase of additional land and to finance their playing activities for the year.
Speaking on the Draw’s success to date Seamus Coughlan, County Draw Coordinator, stated “There has been great dedication among the club coordinators and sellers who have tirelessly canvassed family, friends and work colleagues to raise vital funds for Cork clubs. As a result over €12 million has been raised and it has been fundamental to the development of our clubs. In fact the success of the draw is all down to the coordinators and sellers in the clubs in the county”.
Continuing Coughlan commented “This year we are going on line, opening up ticket sales to more GAA supporters. We are encouraging people who may be living or working away from Cork to buy tickets and show their support for their local, home club”.
This year the draw is bigger and better, with a prize fund of over €575,000. There will be three €50,000 pay outs throughout the year and the range of prizes is excellent. Certainly a very enticing gift to give to family and friends, with Christmas coming up! For an investment of €100 draw members have the chance to win cars, holidays, cash, trips to Cheltenham and Monaco Grand Prix, All Ireland tickets and gym membership.
Officially launching the draw Cllr. Donal Counihan, Lord Mayor of Cork, stated “The GAA Club Draw has provided great financial support to all the clubs in Cork. It is a great tribute to those involved to see how it has grown. I am delighted to be here tonight, with all our supporters, to celebrate its fifteenth year”.
This year sees the launch of a website dedicated to the Club Draw – www.corkgaadraw.ie – with online membership sign up. After considerable research the Cork GAA Club Draw committee engaged with Cork based Fireball Media to develop the innovative website. The committee hopes that the website will encourage younger members to purchase draw tickets on line, given the technology culture of today. Also, it offers family and friends abroad to purchase tickets and support clubs back home in Cork.
Congratulating the Cork GAA Club Draw committee Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment stated “It is a great achievement for Cork GAA Club Draw to be celebrating fifteen years in existence. This highlights the importance the draw plays when it comes to club funding and the support on the ground for the draw. It is encouraging to see an association, steeped in tradition, utilising modern technology to raise awareness of the clubs and vital funds”.
The Cork GAA Club Draw will run from September 2007 to August 2008, with the September / October draws taking place on Friday, October 26th. Tickets can be purchased from local club coordinators or on line at www.corkgaadraw.ie.
